Minister for Energy, Simon Corbell, today congratulated the proponents, Energy Matters, on their 29.6kW solar roof lease installation in Hume. Mr Corbell said the significant solar installation will be a success story on many fronts, most notably cementing Canberra's status as the Solar Capital of Australia. It demonstrates one of the many ways businesses and the community can cooperate to invest in renewable energy and work towards a more sustainable future, Minister Corbell said.

This is also one of Australia's first solar roof lease of this scale, and I hope the first of many larger scale installations across the Territory. There are a number of large buildings and open space across the Territory which could be suitable for a solar installation of this size. It is pleasing to see local businesses making better use of this space by allowing others access to harness renewable energy. I applaud both Energy Matters and Ullrich Aluminium, the tenants, for their cooperative approach into achieving this great renewable energy outcome. The proponents will also have access to the ACT's Feed-in Tariff scheme.

Proposals such as this are amongst the first of a wave of investment in clean energy in the ACT, an investment which over time will approach $1.3 billion.
