Kate-lundyFederal Labor representatives for the ACT, Senator Kate Lundy, Gai Brodtmann MP and Andrew Leigh MP, today welcomed the passage of the ACT (Self-government) Amendments (Disallowance and Amendment Power of the Commonwealth) Bill in the Senate.

The bill removes the power of the Executive to overturn Territory legislation behind closed doors and strengthens the democratic rights of ACT residents.

ACT Liberal Senator, Gary Humphries, toed the Liberal Party line and voted against the legislation on the Senate floor.

It is disappointing that Senator Humphries did not support this important Bill.

The Bill seeks to provide his constituents with democratic rights equal to those in the states.

Senator Humphries cannot claim to defend Canberra and then vote against the interests of his constituents in the Senate chamber.

Once again Senator Humphries has turned his back on the ACT community and failed to support the democratic rights of the Territory.
