The 2011 ACT Budget has been well-received in the local media with extra money for important services across the ACT, especially in the fastest growing areas in Canberra’s north. Deputy Chief Minister and Treasurer Katy Gallagher delivered a disciplined Budget, her third as ACT Treasurer. Ms Gallagher stated “The Budget focused on meeting our commitments to the community, increasing frontline services experiencing demand pressures, and supporting those in our community who need additional support.”

As well as carefully managing growing costs, improving the efficiency of government services and meeting areas of increasing demand, the Budget also continues the Stanhope Labor Government’s record investments in the Territory’s essential infrastructure. Other highlights in the 2011 ACT Budget include:

  • Gallagher3Continued good performance of the ACT economy despite the challenges of the Global Financial Crisis and reduced GST funding. The ACT continues to outperform most states in a large number of economic indicators.
  • Extra funds for more services at Canberra’s hospitals. An extra 400 surgical operations will be funded in 2011-12.
  • An extra 30 paramedics and 5 ambulances.
  • A $20million boost for special needs in schools.
  • New buildings, better teacher salaries and disability support for local schools, including more money for expanding schools where there is higher demand like Macgregor and Majura Primary Schools.
